ON WHITE HORSE HILL
This is my debut album, of songs I've written myself.
The title track is about my favourite archaeological landscape, around the White Horse of Uffington. But the song is based on various details of folklore surrounding it, rather than the factual information we have learned about the monuments. The opening track, White Horses, echoes the tradition of carving figures onto chalk hillsides.
Gardner Island is a historical song about the fate of Amelia Earhart. When it was written, it was speculative. Now it is accepted as the true account of what happened. I researched details such as the fauna on the island, and what she ate, from archaeology reports.
Blodeuwedd, Lilies, King of the Autumn, and the Wolf Within are all based on folklore.
The Kissing Game and Shadowtime are each, in their own way, about an old friend who went by the stage name of Epic Soundtracks, and was drummer with Swell Maps and the Jacobites, as well as following a career as a solo singer/songwriter. Shadowtime also has roots in folklore because it is about this person night visiting.
